Welcome to Friary Dene a relaxing and friendly Guest House in Bath

Friary Dene is on the edge of Hinton Charterhouse, a small village set in a beautiful location only five miles from the City of Bath.

The Priory was established in 1232 and played an important part in the history of the village. There is also the Norman Church of St John The Baptist, which has an impressive tower.

Friary Dene guest house is the perfect destination base for a mini break, a shopping extravaganza, an active holiday or a soul searching, artistic and photographic retreat.

Its location makes it an ideal base for exploring the attractions of the historic city of Bath, from the Roman Baths temple, the Thermae Bath Spa, to the Bath Abbey. From history and Art, to Jane Austen and fashion, there really is something for everyone.

With the close proximity of the historical town of Bath a visit to the Abbey with it’s stunning Gothic architecture is breathtaking, it is on a site where three churches have stood over the past 12 and a half Centuries. Why not see the fine plasterwork at Westwood Manor with a topiary garden or the Botanical Gardens spread over nine acres, with a scented walk and Roman Temple.

For those belonging to the outdoor pursuits club there is; Wellow and the White Horse Trekking Centre for horse riding. Be a cowboy for the day – why not try western riding at the Mendip Stud.

Archery, clay pigeon shooting, quad biking, hang gliding, climbing, caving, extreme off roading, diving and shooting can all be arranged for you. Fancy a day on the race track at Castle Coombe!

Bath and the surrounding area is brimming with things to see and do. Designated as a World Heritage Site, Bath presents some of the finest architectural sights in Europe such as the Royal Crescent, the Circus and Pulteney Bridge, alongside a diverse collection of museums and attractions. The compact city centre offers an irresistible shopping experience combined with plenty of activities to enjoy in the surrounding countryside.

For art lovers there's the Holburne Museum of Art and the Victoria Art Gallery, as well as the fascinating Bath Aqua Theatre of Glass where you can watch hand made glass works of art being created before your very eyes.

Beyond Bath, step back to the days of ancient Britons with a walk around the Standing Stones of Stanton Drew, a day trip to Stonehenge. If visiting castles are a temptation then Farleigh Hungerford Castle was built in 1370, has a chequered past, the fabulous Medieval wall paintings in the chapel are a delight, or time it right and catch one of the Military re-enactments that take place and only two minutes up the road from Friary Dene.

For inspirational days out discover Corsham Court and Stourhead House, a magnificent palladian mansion set amidst breathtaking parklands. There are the medieval cloisters of Lacock Abbey, featured in two Harry Potter Films, Dyrham Park, a showcase for all things Dutch. Or you could always pop next door from Friary Dene and visit Iford Manor, The Peto Garden. A Grade 1 Italian styled garden, famous for its tranquil beauty. The cloister at Iford is the regular home for opera productions, Opera Now said of Iford ‘one of the worlds two most exotic opera venues’.

Discover the Cotswold village of Castle Coombe and the Wiltshire White Horse, equestrians and the brave, there is the Wiltshire White Horse Trekking centre.

As well as its rich history, of which there is much, and classic architecture, Bath City and its environs offer the finest shopping outside of London. Here can be found a wealth of independent shops, which give the city and its surroundings a unique appeal. From galleries, museums, renowned festivals, (November really is a great time with the Bath Christmas Market) gourmets, collectors and the fashion conscience. Bath really has something for everyone, all within an easy walk.

Bath and the surrounding areas, host a selection of traditional British pubs selling fantastic, homemade food alongside local ales and ciders. They offer the ideal way of experiencing the West Country lifestyle. With daily changing menus which are full of local seasonal produce of which we are big fans of at Friary Dene Bed and Breakfast, from The Garricks Head and King William in Bath and The Oakhill Inn, in Oakhill to the Wheatsheaf in Coombe Hay and The Seven Stars at Winsley, we can vouch for them all as pretty good! – What better way to finish a day's walking or cycling in glorious these surroundings?
